Online gambling in the NetherlandsDutch online punters are in for a pretty good time now that the Netherlands is set to become the next nation that will legalise online gambling. The historic legislation was passed by the European country’s House of Representatives earlier in July.

The Dutch Remote Gaming bill sanctioned by the lower house is expected to be “rubber stamped” by the Senate later this year.

“According to a statement from Amsterdam-based gaming consultancy, Revenue Engineers, the regulations could come into force as early as 2017.”

Revenue Engineers continued to say that this legislation will open the path for the Netherlands to operate a fully controlled online gambling market. In doing so online gaming firms looking to break into the Dutch market will be welcomed with open arms. It will also create an overload of new opportunities for gaming operators and providers.

Lotteries and casinos

After a number of amendments were approved, which included the one that will prohibit lotteries and land-based operators from using the databases of existing players to promote their online offerings, the Dutch Remote Gaming Bill was passed. A second amendment required land-based casinos to put up barriers for physical entry and player identification. They are also expected to contribute to the Problem Gambling Fund.

Jaspar Hoekert, a presentative of Revenue Engineers, expressed their delight at finally seeing the Dutch Remote Gaming Bill pass through parliament. He continued to say that although some of the aspects regarding the legislation is not ideal, it still creates a workable framework that will allow the Netherlands to rise as one of “Europe’s most important gaming jurisdictions”.

Gaming operators and providers looking to cash in on this new opportunity are encouraged to act as quickly as they can and seek out local expertise.
